Ideal planning lead time for best prices

Disney World planning has a reputation for being overwhelming — and it is, if you try to do everything at once. The secret is knowing what to do when. Some things need to be booked 6 months out; others can wait until the week before. This timeline tells you exactly what to do each month so nothing falls through the cracks.

6 Months Out

Choose your travel dates

Check Disney's crowd calendar and ticket price calendar. Value season dates (January, late August, early September) are significantly cheaper and less crowded.

Set your total budget

Decide your all-in number before booking anything. Allocate by category: tickets, hotel, flights, food, extras.

Book flights

Flight prices are typically lowest 3–6 months out for domestic travel. Set a price alert on Google Flights and book when you see a good fare.

Book your hotel

Disney resort reservations open 499 days in advance. Off-site hotels can be booked anytime — but book early for the best rates and room selection.

5 Months Out

Buy park tickets

Tickets are date-specific. Buy through Undercover Tourist for 5–8% savings. Prices increase as your date approaches — buy now.

Decide on Lightning Lane

Lightning Lane Multi Pass is purchased day-of, but Individual Lightning Lane for top rides sells out fast. Research which rides you want and have a plan.

Research dining

Identify 1–2 table service restaurants you want to try. Disney dining reservations open 60 days in advance — mark your calendar.

Now that you know when to book, here's exactly how to budget every category — from tickets to food to souvenirs.

3 Months Out

Make dining reservations (60-day window)

Reservations open exactly 60 days before your check-in date for resort guests (60 days before each day for non-resort guests). Be online at 6am EST on your booking day for popular restaurants.

Plan your park days

Assign each park to a day. Consider park hours, Extra Magic Hours, and crowd levels. Magic Kingdom on a Saturday is a different experience than Magic Kingdom on a Tuesday.

Download My Disney Experience

Link your tickets, hotel, and dining reservations in the app. Familiarize yourself with the interface before you're standing in a park trying to figure it out.

1 Month Out

Check park hours and special events

Disney updates park hours 30–60 days out. Special ticketed events (Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, etc.) can affect regular park hours.

Order groceries for delivery

Schedule a grocery delivery to your hotel for arrival day. Breakfast items, snacks, and water for the whole trip. Garden Grocer and Amazon Fresh both deliver to Disney resorts.

Pack your bag

Comfortable shoes (this cannot be overstated), a small backpack, refillable water bottle, portable charger, sunscreen, and any medications.
